Donations for Makers

Hi everyone,

I’m excited to be part of this wonder project connecting the possibilities of 3D printing with helping children.

As I’m getting ready for my first build, and I’m waiting for kits to be available, I’ve been looking around. I noticed one the main 3d-mobility.org website there is an option to donate a complete kit for $100. I’ve noticed because of shipping constraints that cost for the kit has increased to $150 for the offical kit. Is it possible to make another easy click donation button on the page to cover the full $150.

I would also like to raise awareness and have my own fundraising campaign. Is it possible to integrate a Maker fundraiser link that can be posted on Facebook/Instagram/… and in my office via QR Code that would allow people to donate directly to the builds I’m working on?

This would help individual contributors know which builds I’m working on, and have completed. It would be a way for people to donate to a 501c3, and directly fund an specific maker. The Maker could choose to put it in a general build, or transfer to another maker in their area if they aren’t able to accept the build. Either way, a completely funded kit is available.

We need to udpate that amount to $150 to cover shipping. We will also look into maker-specific funding. Its set up for REQUESTS to be funded, not makers. I do like your idea though it should be easy enough. @MakeGoodScott

Hi Scott. Any update on the possibility to have a direct donation to a specific Maker that they can use for acquiring filament / build kit from schoolhousespools.com

Yup. Thats been on the road map for a long time and is just waiting on a shipment of filament to arrive.

We are going to release parts kits donations first. Assuming nothing comes up in testing it will be this Friday evening. Once filament arrives we will open it up to full kits.

The donations will be directed at the request level. Once enough is collected the request will be labeled as “kit provided”. when a maker claims the request it will trigger the workflow for the maker to click a link to schoolhousespools and we will ship the kit out. For the time being this is US only.

Working on EU, Mexico, and Canada kits as well.

When people donate in this manner will it be going to make good inc which is a 501c3? That is the small hiccup I am having with some organizations that want to donate. They have rules stating they have to be going to a recognized charity aka having the 501c3 number.

Correct. It will be to make good. then make good will purchase it from schoolhouse.

Yes this is the exact reason why I asked for it this way. The donor makes a donation to 3d-mobility.org which is a 501(c)3 non-profit. They make the acquisition request to schoolhouse spools.com with your shipping address.

In the future it would be nice if there was a mechanism to make procurements through other retailers such as BambuLab, Numaker, Amazon for TPU selections.

We’re working on other filament suppliers. I dont want to be a monopoly here.

I love your filament, I see some awesome accents with TPU which is outside of the normal PETG that I source from you for the builds. BTW, thank you very much for providing the PETG at an economical price that allows us to donate our time, machines, and gas money to deliver a 200 mile radius (one way).

For the maker, how does one get on the list of ‘able to receive donated kits’? Previously I thought I saw something about having done 5 builds and kits could be available but that has changed to 20% off schoolhouse spools instead. I am on my 4th and 5th solo builds finishing this week and my first build was partnered with another maker bringing my thus far total to 6.

There are 2 options under consideration for allowing makers to accept donated kits. I want to believe in the good of people and go with option 1.

1: Any approved maker, even for their first build.

2: Makers with at least 1 completed build.

It has always been 20% off schoolhouse after/every 5 builds. That hasn’t changed. Honestly I didn’t think so many people would be hitting 5 builds so quickly but here we are. If you/anyone has issues with the code emailed feel free to reach out.

Honestly, you could allow a first time maker to donate to their account, and allow them to apply that to a build.

The maker contributes a charitable donation, it goes through the same mechanism for having a sponsored build.

There is no risk to anyone for the first build.

I personally would prefer to see funding a 501(c)3 account that would then accumulate for multiple builds. For example making a $1,500 donation for my builds and that would allow me to claim 10 builds. If the build is already funded I wouldn’t have to use one of my 10. If I go to business asking for sponsorship that amount would increase that I could draw upon. I could also gift it to other makers.

I’m not against that.

Currently its funding to the request level. We could work out how to donate "credits for parts/fullkits to the maker. then the maker could apply them to builds they pick. I just need to make sure we don’t become a financial institutional accidentally and run into issues there.

Wait. Does that mean we get it again at 10 builds???

you should

AFAIK Myself and @TDK1013 are the only ones at 10 (or 14 for him but who’s counting  ) But nothing came up about it going again. I am good on filament until you get more in so I will get with you after that and see what we need to do.

@NWCC one of them is the result of your shenanigans

True, but that’s not counted in that number. That is just your completed builds

it should be fixed now and sending codes. and backfilling.
