Donations for Makers

I got the email! Thanks!

I see there are some changes on the map  You can now donate to a build, or fund a Maker. Not sure if it is a bug or not, but delivered builds show the same donate button. Where can we go to find out how this all will work? Thanks

How Directed Kit Donations Work on MakeGood

When you see a “Donate Kit” or “Fund This Build” button next to a child’s request, here’s exactly what happens:

1. You pick a build to sponsor
Buttons appear on the Community Map, the Open Requests page, and individual Build Story pages. Clicking one takes you to the donation page already linked to that specific child’s request.

2. You choose an amount

  • $42 covers the hardware/parts kit (screws, bearings, casters, etc.)
  • $150 covers a full filament + hardware kit (disabled until filament arrives)
  • Custom amounts are also accepted and accumulate toward the threshold

3. Payment goes through Stripe
A secure Stripe checkout handles the transaction. Nothing is stored until payment is confirmed.

4. The kit gets assigned automatically
Once payment confirms, the system ties the donation to that child’s request. If the full $42 threshold is met, a redemption code is generated automatically and a Shopify discount code is created so the maker can order the hardware kit for free.

5. Everyone gets notified

  • The family gets an email letting them know a kit has been funded for their build
  • The maker (once assigned) gets the redemption code and ordering instructions
  • The donor(s) gets a thank-you email with a private tracking link so they can follow the build’s progress

6. Admins can manage it too
If donations accumulate toward a build but haven’t crossed the threshold yet, admins can see the funding progress and manually trigger kit conversion when ready. Pool kits (unassigned donations) can also be directed to any open request from the admin panel.

From the donor’s side
If someone wants to support a specific maker, they go to the donate page with that maker’s ID in the URL. The page pre-selects “Support a specific maker” and the money is tied to that maker when it goes through Stripe.

What the maker sees
After the donation clears, a blue banner appears at the top of the maker’s dashboard saying “You have a hardware kit donation waiting.” It shows the amount and the donor’s name if they weren’t anonymous.

The maker assigns it themselves
The maker picks which of their active builds to apply it to from a dropdown, then hits “Apply Kit.” The system:

  • Creates the kit record tied to that build
  • Generates a redemption code (e.g. MG-XXXX)
  • Marks the build as kit-supplied
  • Locks the donation so it can’t be used twice

What the maker gets
The banner is replaced by a redemption section on that build’s card with two codes:

  • A kit code for the hardware
  • A shipping code (kit code + -FS) for free shipping

There’s a direct “Redeem at Schoolhouse Spools” button that opens their Shopify checkout with both codes pre-applied.

Is the code for free full kit auto-generated/emailed once the 5th build is approved? or how does this work?

that is a discount code for filament from us at schoolhouse. every 5 gets you discounted filament.

When does this go live?

Additionally if an organization donates in this manner directly to a maker, do they get a receipt for tax purposes for donating to a 501c3?

They are donating to makegood. then makegood is handling the payment to schoolhouse/other vendors eventually.

I’m testing the flows at lunch. but it should be accepting donations now. sorry for the confusion here. wasn’t supposed to be visible to all like this but once cat is out of the bag I can’t put it back in.

@MakeGood_Noam @MakeGoodScott, My employer Cisco Systems, Inc has an employee matching donation option if the 501(c)3 is registered on benevity.org.

I see Make Good Inc is already registered. Is there a way to make a donation and have it assigned to a maker?

I also noticed that the website listed on benevity.org is listed as http://www.makegood.design which doesn’t work.

Regards,
-Jason

If they click on your name in the community map they have the option to donate to you as an individual maker.

i take it this is just for the US only and not for UK ? as we cant get kits over here yet i dont think

I have the same through mine, they do double match. So if I donate $50 that will equate to a full kit by the full donation.

Any chance of knowing if that type of system can be tied together?

Will there be a tax donation receipt emailed to the donors with the contribution details similar to what we get when we complete a build?

you UK folks and your brexit. we’re working on getting them in stock in the EU (poland) not sure how that would do on shipping/customs stuff. gotta think it out.

That was on my pipeline but i moved it up. they should/will get an email receipt with the donation 503 pdf attached. with proper EIN/name/ etc.

i think if its under 135gbp (180dollars) we don’t pay customs charge on imports. but yeah not sure what shipping would be

Not me donating $1 to myself earlier today to see how it went :joy::joy::joy:.

Thank you for answering my questions, just had a couple organizations lined up to donate and wanted to strike while they still remembered they wanted to donate.
