Offering and Choosing Colors

So many questions.

How do you all go about having the families choose colors?

When the build says Blue or Purple, are they referring to the kit blue and purple gradient?

Do you let the families know what you have in stock for color or are you ordering filament per build?

First my wife is my Angle Donor, so I now have a pretty good stock of the asked for colors. For my first build they asked for purple. I started a conversation through the message board. As it turned out they wanted purple and pink, but also yellow and light blue as accent colors. I used the 3D color painting tool Cheese3DPrints developed (you can ask to be added to the beta test)

Now my actual first build was really a test to see if I could build the TMT. I used what I had, the second build I claimed loved the colors and the rest is history.

I think the site is really setup currently to only offer blue and purple which is why the families are picking one or the other. Which is because of the kits.

I have been reaching out to families and just asking general ideas from them and then if I found a good deal on filament I was asking options from what was there. The families have all been super open to anything really so just talk with them and figure out what works best for you and them.

My first build commented what colors they wanted, So I sent them a screen grab of the tmt painted up to see what they thought. Second build specifically asked for the bluey wheelchair that nonny designed. Both resulted in me creating an Amazon wishlist of material needed that I sent around for donations to build the chairs. I did end up buying a purple kit, which I’m not sure how that will go now that a lot of requests are getting a lot more specific about characters.

We have very talented people here and there are some fabulous TMTs in the gallery so I’m sure this is why. I’m looking forward to trying a wheel. I also am thinking of making an Autism TMT. I’ve seen them requested in those colors and might be a way to rid myself of some of my one off spools.

I agree these wheels are amazing and I’m very excited for the bluey build I’m doing now. There is a request near me asking for ms rachel, but I see all those colors and can only imagine how long that would take me. I’m already at 8-11 hrs per wheel section with bluey.

It makes me think again about potentially designing snap on covers that can be switched out. Where maybe a couple tabs and the center cap hold them in place.

I just ran them through my slicer so I could tell @MakeGoodScott how much filament it is. One wheel section (1/2 of the wheel) is 6 colors and 11.5 hrs to print. The other is 8 colors and 12 hrs to print. In the custom wheel thread I have told everyone that I will print them and ship them for anyone needing them. All I ask is you cover shipping which I get good discounts for through my shopify store.

That’s amazing. Will definitely keep that in mind for my next build.

Wow, after reading all the comments I feel like I should work on my people skills :slightly_smiling_face:

I have been going of description and taking full creative freedom with colors…so far no complaints and all recipients seemed excited, but I do wonder if I should have asked for input.

I don’t think there is a wrong way to go about it. I am sorta in the middle with it. I ask what colors but I decide what goes where on the chair. And I ask for the child’s interest to see if there would be a cool wheel or something to go along with it. But I don’t let them pick and choose each color for each part. And they get a few days to get back to me in the beginning after that I just get to work.

At the end of the day. The main purpose is to get a child a device they need to better their mobility. Everything past that is secondary IMHO.
