So I picked a build, my 1st. Color choice said Purple and a few Disney type characters. Being my 1st build I kept it simple and went Purple and white. Finish the build. Get approved, try and set a delivery date (1.5hrs from my house each way) the family responds with , “wish we could have incorporated pink and purple together instead of white” I explain all I see is purple and they respond with basically asking me to redo the chair in pink and not white since it’s for their daughter and that she “thinks” she put pink and purple down…
maybe I misunderstood to the goal here and thought the mobility aspect was most important? Not so much the colors, even tho I used the color they asked for, didn’t see pink anywhere. Kinda takes rhe fun out of it no?
Wow, that sucks. I’m sorry. It sure does put a dampener on it. If you’re planning on making more you could remove the white and repurpose them to another build. Frankly though, that’s above and beyond expectations.
This right here. You built them a chair using your own time and money and get nothing in return from them, for them to expect you to go through and change the entire chair after the fact is just too much. I would find a nice way to say “take it or leave it”. If they don’t want it I promise there are a BUNCH who would absolutely love that chair the way it is. You did a great job on it!
Thanks. Yeah I was a little taken back by the request and simply expected and thank you lol… I might ask the admin team to unclaim the build and I can find someone that might appreciate the item and its functionality vs not having pink.
I promise this has not been the norm that I have seen. I have delivered 6 so far and have 3 more complete and ready to deliver Sunday. Everyone of them so far has been just happy to be getting a chair and had zero complaints at all.
This does open the issues of expectations more broadly though. Those not in the 3d printing world do not understand the complexity of one of these builds or the shear time and money involved. The more we customize wheels and colors the more families might think it’s the status quo. I’m not sure what the right balance is here. I think it’s great to customize when we can. I just don’t know how to level set expectations as color and graphics customization is not possible for every builder.
I agree, most have no idea what it takes to build these. And the Make Good team has done a good job of setting expectations I think. But when people don’t take the time to read it all clearly, and to put all the info into the appropriate areas when they make their request, it’s not always easy for Makers to know exactly what they want. I don’t care for the only color options being blue and purple. And it seems to be a big issue of families not checking their messages often and staying in communication with the builders. A few messages at the beginning of the build could have cleared this up easy, but sometimes they just don’t respond.
I echo what everyone else has said here. Your chair looks amazing and I guarantee there is another requestor that will greatly appreciate what you have done for them! Great job, and keep printing! That chair will bless another family shortly…
Yeah this is rough, I have only had families super happy to be receiving one, especially for free. I also haven’t been doing any requests for design other than color. I unfortunately don’t really have the time or amount of filament to do the cool designs but I let families know early its just the color I am doing and they are more than welcome to decorate with paint and stickers however they want.
I can see the social media aspect of these with make good showing off all the cool builds setting the expectations for families a little too high. Of course you can make an awesome design chair but I could also spend that time and money printing another chair for another family which is the thought process I have went with.
Don’t let this discourage you though match that chair with another family and hopefully their excitement and appreciation for it give you the motivation you need.
Very frustrating, but don’t let it get to you. My take is if they want specific colors, they can pay for all the materials and wait for another print and this one would go to another family.
Yeah I almost think the site should give the family the option to donate towards their chair if they want to specifically design the colors or have a design printed. I know @NWCC has been super nice to print custom wheels for people, the family could pick an option and donate towards their wheels & shipping if they want that.
