I think I am ready to claim a build. I went to the family ( on my map ) that has been waiting the longest in my radius. But they are a good ways out. With that said since this is my 1st build should I pick somebody local to me incase of the unknown. Or the family that has been waiting the longest? What should I anticipate?
It’s kind of up to you.
For my first one I went with the closest one I could find. Since it was all new to me I wanted to make it as easy as possible.
I’m in the same boat as you, got approved yesterday, and there’s 4 requests within “reasonable” distance. I picked the closest family, not the oldest request. Saying that, the closest family is the only one who provided any insight to child’s condition, which strengthens their case. If they were further away? I’d probably still pick them.
Ultimately I feel as a volunteer maker, it’s up to you to decide, browse through candidates and see which one you feel like undertaking.
Just to echo what’s been said, I had the same questions for my first one. Went with a close one and it worked out well, just delivered my second a little further out.
It feels bad to not pick the ones that have been waiting the longest but the most important thing is just getting them out there. There’s not wrong answer here.
I went with the story that grabbed me the most. It was far but I felt pulled to do it. Some families don’t put details that cause that. The long wait times, eventhough I have closer ones, are what get me now. Luckily there’s another builder near me and we are working together on knocking out our areas list.
I’m with you on this. I’m brand new to this and just claimed my first build, but while there was an incredibly close need only 36 days old, I looked around at the stories and days waiting and grabbed the one that tugged on my heart.
My 2nd will likely be the closer one once this is delivered.
I kind of did the same to be honest. Florida is huge and there’s many requests out there.
Well I decided to go the easy route and do my first one local. It was really a no brainer for me. I just make things hard on myself. My wife is a recently retired pre-k spec ed teacher. And her girlfriend is also. So her gf contacted one of the family’s that need it the most and gave her my info.
