Consequences of backing out of a build

If we claim a build and then need to cancel it are there any lasting consequences? Does it matter if it’s canceled because the family decided they didn’t need it (them) or I decided I couldn’t deliver (me). IOW does the reason matter?

Also, is there a limit to the number of builds we can claim?

Context - when my current build is done I’ll likely claim the two next nearest which happen to have been waiting for ~145 days each. I wouldn’t want to be dinged if the family has changed their mind in the last 145 days. Since they are a bit further from me but close to each other I’d ensure the family was ok with a longer build time (they’ve already waited 145 days) so that I can build and deliver the two close together.

Good question, I’ve had similar ideas. There is a request not far from me, the color - camouflage. Camo is a pattern, not a color. I get it, but how do I build a camo TMT? I want to reach out to the family, but I need to claim the device to do so….

Maybe some combination of dark green, lighter green and yellowish-green? Or if it’s a girl it could be 2 or 3 shades of pink and purple. But finding a bulk filament pack like that is unlikely.

To eliminate the issue of odd color requests, there could be a standardized list of colors customers could pick from when making their build request? Maybe specific colors with choice of accent or secondary, and third choices etc. Just a thought! :upside_down_face:

edit. nvm just saw the thread about this tool being made!

But yes Camo would be a tough one I agree, I’m lucky enough my first local request was just ‘purple’. I let them know it would be purple, with Yellow TPU parts and they approved. :ok_hand:

hey! there are 2 questions here -

are there consequences of backing out of a build? No. You are placed in a ‘penalty box’ but we will clear it immediately. That functionality is for someone who is a serial claimer/unclaimer and is messing with the site (bad actor)

Custom colors - the site was never really designed to have all of these custom color requests. I think its great the makers are taking these on, but once the kits are released there will be a choice between Blue and Purple (to start at least) corresponding to the available kit colors. Obviously you can still purchase whatever filament you want and chat with the family about it, but we are trying to streamline this process.

My advise - do the best you can with the custom colors, but its not a huge deal overall. We appreciate all of yall for the hard work you guys are putting in to help these kids!

Here is kind of an idea for camo. Until I get the colors added to the database for the tool im building - this is the best I can help with. At least to give you kind of an idea of a route to go.

I like both sides of the spectrum here. While the kits will he a huge benefit, being able to do a custom build for a kid is equally as fulfilling.

I like if a maker as the ability to do something custom to make somes day then thats part of what this is all about.

In the end it doesnt matter if its a kit or custom build as long as we put a smile on some faces and give them a little more mobility freedom then whatever the process is well worth it.

I’m in brooklyn and saw that one too lol. I think I would just do a mix of olive green, gray, and tan like colours between the different parts in no particular pattern.

I use ChatGPT for my color schemes, so threw the idea in there to put something together. This would be a cool color scheme for camouflage. Of course this isn’t the exact design of the chair, but it gives a pretty good idea of the colors.

Those are very cool, of course I don’t have any PETG in those colors…lol. Back to AliExpress lol… they have a great sale right now. I’m going to save that pic. That might be the chair. Thank you.

crazy idea here for camo. But i used a yoga mat on one cut to size instead of foaming tpu. What about a camo mat

Still haven’t hear back from the family, but the TMT that looks like an Army vehicle in olive green, black, brown and tan. I think that looks very cool. We will see, but the mat thing sounds like a great idea. How did you attach it since the upper part is curved? Thanks

I met the family on facebook and they didn’t want a headrest because the child was too old. But if i had id have used velcro(r)

So team @MakeGood_Noam has not been able to reach the family of my third build. I just sent them a Priority envelope with a letter to the address they had for a drop off which is a residence. If I hear back - great - if not, here are the paths I’m thinking about.

Leaving the build claimed - If I un-claim the build someone else will go through what I have been going through - maybe sometime they will get a hold of me or admin.

Now that I’m thinking about it, I see no reason to un-claim it….

Thoughts?

If you have already built the chair you can just go knock on the door and drop it off maybe?

I haven’t built it yet. Challenge is they are no where that I would ever go. Bronx, NY. I don’t go to the city. I would to drop off a TMT. They haven’t answered their emails and the phone that once worked for admin, now doesn’t. I can only imagine what that family is going through.

Yeah that’s a shame. Hopefully they will come around eventually and you’ll be able to build it.

This is a good idea, I agree you should keep it claimed. This feels like something that needs to be handled at the organization level, not on the builder side. Once Noam or someone else on the MakeGood side come up with a workflow for dealing with “no call/no show" requests, they can either unclaim it for you, or disable it, or whatever they come up with.

This isn’t meant to read as a critique of MakeGood. I realize this site is still very new, as is the workflow of coordinating volunteers and builds across the world. We’re all iterating as we’re going here. I’m sure these are just growing pains we’ll work through.

It doesn’t read that way to me. I feel we are all part of the project at this point. Anytime something scales up you run into things you didn’t envision during the launch.
