Caster wheel alternatives

Hi,

Does anyone know of a good alternative caster wheel which is a bit easier to apply and release when you are wearing socks only. The metal one recommended can be a bit rough. The original photos of the earlier prototypes had a different caster wheel that may work better in this scenario (pictured below).

I’m making a chair for my daughter’s therapy clinic and the therapist don’t wear shoes and want it to be easy to apply and release and not potentially hurt them.

You bring up a REALLY good point. I am not happy with the blue caster wheels for this reason. Soon, we will offer a kit shipped with all hardware/wheels for around 20$ it will include a similar caster as you see in the screenshot above that is much better to use. It will require a new printed rear wheel mount and the use of different slightly different front casters as well.

Much appreciated @MakeGood_Noam! That will be a huge benefit from a cost and functionality standpoint. I’ll definitely be buying a couple.

@MakeGood_Noam do you have a sense of when these hardware kits will be available for purchase through MakeGood? Ballpark?

Or can we reach out to buy one informally before the whole process is set up?

It would be very helpful for our build(s) if we could source all of the hardware from MakeGood especially since it is hard to get the McMaster-Carr caster in Canada.

And having the alternate caster where the brake can be deployed without shoes on is definitely helpful.

Thanks a bunch,

Amy

Any updates on the hardware kit, please? We’re getting ready to build our first one and only need the hardware. OR… has anyone ordered all the parts on Amazon and can link them for me, please. I have to order via my organization, and McMaster isn’t an authorized vendor for them. :-/ Thank you!

Following! We just got our printer waiting on filament’s.

Very Interested in the Hardware Kit, I have already printed 2 chairs and just sourcing Hardware for them now.

Is there anywhere that has specs for the casters? I used to work for a company that sold casters and I’d like to contact them to see if they could supply me with some but I need specs (dimensions, etc) to be able to do that.

we are having some issues with the hardware kits. There will have to be a separate print file for kits, as the caster mounting plate and the bolts are slightly different.

front caster - 35mm tall to top of plate

rear caster - 125.5mm tall to top of plate

I love the idea of buying a hardware kit from the MakeGood dashboard. I ended up ordering enough parts to build 2 TMTs since everything was sold in odd lots on Amazon and McMaster-Carr. I also think the suggested rear caster is overtly expensive so a $20 kit would be awesome!

I’ve been using these casters from Amazon. You can get 4 of them for close to the price of one from McMaster Carr. I had to edit the mount just a touch but they fit great! If anyone wants the adjusted mount I will gladly post it.

Edit to add the caster mount files…

That would be great. I already have the McMaster-Carr on hand but this is a big deal especially if we’re going out of pocket. I’d definitely hope @MakeGood_Noam might consider updating to include this as an option in the build sheet. After I make it through my first/current build, will definitely look for these on the next..although of course, would be great if they had non-orange.

I don’t disagree, but thankfully its under the chair enough that you really don’t notice it much. I had these on hand already for another project that stalled out, and have used them on other projects before so I know they are a very good caster. I’m sure another one could be used just the same, but might be a different height or different size for the plate and need further adjustments. If you plan to build multiple chairs, its hard to beat 4 for $26 vs 1 for $33

There are several other similar ones on Amazon that are other colors. There’s also one that looks like the brake would be much easier to operate, unfortunately, it is orange. It does not have as high of a weight limit, but each one rates for 300lbs, which is more than the chair rating + the chair. Do you think this one would work? Here is what I look at for the Casters…

This image is from the ones you linked

And this is from the ones I linked and adjusted the file for

The only difference I see is yours are 2mm taller. That may not make any difference. The plate is the same size as mine so it should work in the files I modified.

Here are the specs for the current caster…

I just purchased this one but the plate ended up being 3.5mm larger. I think that it would have been a great substitute for price and availability.

Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing.
