Rear Caster mounts - re-sizing for different plate dimensions

Hi there,
I am in Canada and we haven’t been able to source a rear caster with the same size of mounting plate as the one from McMaster-Carr listed in the bill of materials (mounting plate - 3.9 inch length, 3.3 inch width; height from floor to top of plate 4.9 inches).

The one we have found is 3.625 inch length and 2.375 inch width.

You mentioned in the video that there would be a parametric version of the caster mount on Maker world.
I am just wondering how one would go about resizing the caster mount it if the plate of the caster is smaller than the one in the bill of materials.

Is it possible to print some spacers to fit inside the slits of the caster mount so that it makes up for the difference in intended size of the plate.

I am excited to put together our first TMT but need to figure out this piece to accommodate the different sized plate on the caster.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,
Amy

I have this same question! However, still working on printing.

Hey Amy,

We are still working on the parametric design for the caster mount. If you feel comfortable editing the STEP files, thats no problem. The critical dimension is the height. If its the wrong height the chair might not work.

I bought and used these an 3 chairs I’ve printed so far. They work fine. It feels wobbly until you have the side wheels on then the chair is perfectly stable.

Evan thats great to hear. Can you drop a in your response so I make sure I am looking at the same one

I’m assuming you meant a link.

Here is a link to the Amazon Canada item

I purchased these caster wheels too!!

Hi there!!

If you found a Rear Caster that fits the height, but has slightly different dimensions, I made a tutorial on how to generate the custom parts for it.

It requires Autodesk Fusion. If you don’t have it, I can try to generate them if you provide the plate dimensions (including the circular mount diameter).

Cheers,

are you on makerworld? I think you have everything here to make a customizeable model hosted directly on makerworld

@Evan

Did the castors you purchased on Amazon work in terms of height?

I have a similar castor that seems to measure 5.1 inches (13 cm) - however my measurement may be imperfect. (The castor was purchased for some wood TMTs and I don’t have the link to review the exact specs but it looks similar to this one Evan posted).

I was wondering if this would be okay in terms of height?

Did the castors you linked work well Evan? Did you re-size the castor mount? Or did you leave it as it and it doesn’t seem to shift when it was all assembled?

Thanks for any input,

Amy

I can’t comment on the wood tcmt but can say it worked fine in the printed version. The base is slightly smaller than the insert area but it doesn’t move around at all. It requires a slight tap from a mallet and sits exactly where you install it.

Height wise I’ve had no issues with the particular caster. You may be able to get full measurements from the google link or even cross referencing it to the manufacturer. How I came across making sure it worked was using a link to the original recommended caster and cross referencing its overall size from ground to base. In theory, any 4” caster with the proper measurement from ground to base compared to original should work. I hope that helps

front caster - 35mm tall to top of plate

rear caster - 125.5mm tall to top of plate

Which caster did you purchase? Is it the one that Evan posted a link to?

Did you find that there was any issue with the big wheels rolling and making a constant connection with the ground?

I haven’t had any issues with the ones I have been using. Here is a link to the thread with the casters and the modified 3d printed parts.

I have resized the caster piece to hold the common size, heavy duty castors. Is it OK to share with group?

I used it on 2 TMTs–they work great!

Thanks for making this tutorial and supplying the Fusion files.
When I try to adjust to fit the “blue caster” from AmazonCanada, I get some issues. Any idea what I did wrong? Or, what I can do to patch them up?
