Solution for mounting wheels the "wrong" way

Timing is funny—I just finished working on this idea and than saw this thread News feature on Girl Scout Troop that raised money to make a 3DTMT. @jerrybower made excellent point about why these wheels can only be mounted in one orientation. This mod will address all of these issues, but until @MakeGood_Noam @MakeGoodScott rule on it, these files will not be published or used on any of the TMT’s I print.

Two issues I had with mounting wheels the wrong way:

  1. On the outside, both bolt head and bearing are exposed to elements–dust, moisture, etc.

  1. On the inside (side that faces the chair) there is a big hole designed for cap—it makes it nearly impossible to secure wheel to wheel block without over-tightening or having the wheel wobble.

Solution:

Outside–Cap that fits over the bolt head. I designed it to fit 13mm hex head of bolts from McMaster Carr McMaster-Carr

It covers the bolt and bearing, protecting both from the elements. It protrudes 6.5mm from the surface, which is half the length of the protrusion of grips; it will not increase the overall footprint. Please disregard incorrect (for this scenario) orientation of grips.

Inside—Spacer with the groove for washer from McMaster-Carr I know it adds another piece of hardware to the build, but I would argue that this is one item that most people who built a TMT have an abundance of, since they were sold in packs of 100). This groove can be modified for any size washer, including ones that come in a kit. This creates a perfect mounting surface.

Input is welcome!

I like the bolt head cover. I’d personally want to modify it to fit a small magnet so I know it will stay put

That’s a good idea, but it does add another component that needs to be sourced. One in the picture is very snug, and it takes about the same effort to remove as a standard cap.

I like this modification and you are approved to try it out. I just worry about making the build process too complicated with multi different options for new makers to sort through. How should we handle the posting and sharing of this version?

Maybe keep it to the forums for now? That way they have to come here to find it and understand what it is for before using it?

i am totally fine with that. we can add it to the ‘experimental’ google drive folder

That is a good idea as well!

Thank you!! I will implement it in my upcoming build. It is local to me, so if there are any issues I can address them.

I think until it is confirmed working, keeping it on the forum/adding to experiment folder is a good call. Maybe create a separate profile on maker world with bold lettering explaining what it is once it is polished. I can also work making a more cohesive instructions on implementing it as well as making a new post on both forums.

This would be perfect for these metallic gold and silver PETG I bought for no reason lol. I thought it would be cool to just paint the outside layer with one of them and do the rest black or something to make it look like a spoked wheel. Now just to wait for a build I can use it on.

Is the washer in there actually needed? or can it just be a fully printed part?

I believe it does. When mounting a wheel in traditional way, the lip of the mounting block pushes against the metal core of the bearing. If it pushes against a plastic part (3d printed washer) I think it will cause one of them to deform in a way that the wheel would get loose.

I should have this implemented into my next TMT in the next few days. I will try carting a 50lb bag of rice around the block a few times . I can make a solid 3D printed spacer, and see if there are any wear signs compared to one with metal washer.
