I was thinking about something as far as the custom wheels, and how to make them easier & (hopefully) better.

Right now, a custom wheel is the entire rim assembly, with the custom design integrated into it. If a new design was requested, that would mean an entire new rim.

So, what I was thinking would be some sort of ā€œattachmentā€ for the ā€œplainā€ rim. This would have a ā€œconeā€ with a hole in the center for the wheels bolt to go through. Basically, during assembly, this ā€œconeā€ would go into the wheels hub, then the bolt is inserted as usual. The center hubcap wouldn’t be used at all.

Then, there would be a ā€œplateā€ divided into printable-size pieces. This ā€œplateā€ would be 5-10mm thick, and would be the part that would be printed with the artwork. This plate could be made so that it’s attached near the edge of the rim with glued-in magnets, velcro, etc. The center of the plate would attach to the above-mentioned ā€œconeā€ with some sort of twist-lock connector.

Now, the artwork print is much, much smaller of a job, and the wheels could be swapped out by the family, say for seasonal reasons, or just a ā€œI like nowā€.

Just an idea that was rattling around in my head. I hope I gave a clear enough idea on how it would all come together.

So something like this…

I thought that generator created the entire rim. Now I’m mad at my brain for doing things it didn’t need to LOL.

@NWCC Thank you for your help on my post earlier!

There are two requests in my area, although a lot in the UK for Peppa Pig, including my first build. I told the family that I wouldn’t be able to do it as there is no file available and we aren’t allowed to modify the files ourselves. I will leave the wheels until last if you could do something, it would work out as an amazing surprise… but of course, no pressure!

@Nonny handles most of the creating the files here lately. She is much better/faster at it than I am lol. But if she doesn’t come up with something I will see what I can do! How many colors can you print? I can print them and ship them to you, but I have a feeling that wont be very cheap from the US to the UK lol

I can do up to 8 colours

You should be good then. MOST of them are 8 or less.

Sounds amazing, thank you @NWCC and @Nonny both of your works on this topic are super impressive!!

My daughter has a regular wheelchair, since we printed her chair we notice she moves around herself so much more. She barely will move herself in her normal wheelchair at school- with that being said I want to print a second mobility trainer for her specifically at school. She is 3.5 but still the size of a 1 year old. She will probably be using these until she’s over 10 with her growth so it’s totally worth it. I’m going to save up funds for it but want to start printing in August.

Would anyone consider designing/printing wheels that would match Stormi’s mobility project? We get a ton of questions at school so it was also help reach more people in our community!

Version 8 of the wheel designs reference page (in PNG format) is out now. You can always find it on the Google drive that NWCC maintains.

I guess I am out of the loop or just having a senior moment. Any links or anything to this?

I tagged your custom wheels!! We have this page to help raise funds for the chairs and shows our daughter doing all the fun things/progress! We have gotten 4 chairs funded so far by sharing on our Facebook!
